A few weeks ago, the love of my life once again made Nashville history when he and his brother opened The Band Box, an outdoor bar and restaurant in the Nashville Sounds baseball stadium. This one-of-a kind venue offers elevated, locally source versions of classic baseball fare in a hip and beautiful setting.
Max never puts 100% into the businesses he opens. He puts 150%. There is no task too great or too small for him, and he's always one of the first to arrive and last to leave. What this looks like for each restaurant is different, but for The Band Box, this has meant LONG hours in the HOT Tennessee sun (which I adore, summer stay forever).
Being outside in the heat doesn't just deplete you of water, it depletes you of electrolytes such as potassium, sodium and chloride. This can mean headaches, fatigue, nausea and a whole host of BLAH feelings. To keep my man at peak performance during the opening of The Band Box, I created a all-natural sports drink that I am thrilled to share with y'all today. Unfortunately, most store-bought sports drinks contain refined or artificial sweeteners, vegetable oils and preservatives, which seems to negate the concept of a nourishing beverage all together.
My mixture, on the other hand, is completely full of real-food goodness. It is so refreshing, delicious and simple to whip up, and I've received rave reviews from everyone who has tried it. If I can't bring some to Max in the middle of the day, I'll use it as the base of his morning smoothie for an extra boost of energy.
The base of this beverage is coconut water, which has been used as a sports drink due to its potassium content. Fresh orange juice adds Vitamin C and natural sweetness, and I include 1 whole orange for fiber to help regulate blood sugar. Hibiscus tea has a floral flavor that works perfectly with the other ingredients, but it is also a source of antioxidants and has been shown to lower blood pressure. However, you can absolutely substitute with another tea of your choosing!
Enjoy and stay hydrated this summer!
