|Detoxifying Summer Fruit Salad|
I am a bone-a-fide fruit fanatic. It is my absolute favorite snack and a nonnegotiable in every single breakfast. Growing up, my amazing mama always made sure to keep our fruit supply in surplus, and this tradition continued to lure me home during my college years.
In particular, a lush piece of fruit in the height of summer season is truly one of life’s greatest pleasures. I usually eat it unadulterated—skin on, barely washed, grabbing every last bite until I’m fighting with the pit. But a few nights ago, I couldn’t decide amongst all of the bounty before me…so I didn’t!
Fruit that is organic or local (essentially, free from pesticides) is one of the healthiest additions to your diet. Representing the colors of the rainbow, fruits contain a spectrum of antioxidants that work dutifully to eliminate free radicals, combatting tumor growth, aging and other illness.
The soluble and insoluble fibers in fruit help promote the natural detoxification process, as they regulate blood sugar and insulin levels and move waste quickly through your system. In an effort to give homage to the cleansing and healing benefits of fruit, I created a sauce with some personality to pour on top of my summer goodies. This sauce is as tasty as it is detoxifying, with ingredients like lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and cayenne, which flush your liver and speed metabolism. Mint from my garden adds lovely flecks of green, in addition to a bright, energizing flavor.
Simple, fresh and life-supporting, this dish represents the glory of seasonal eating. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
