|Anti-Aging Valentine's Chocolate Mousse|
Tantalizing title...and I've got the goods to back it up! But if you've glanced at the ingredients, you might be backing up like a puppy before the vet at the words “grassfed gelatin”.
For my Valentine's day present, I implore you to give me a chance to explain the GEL, which is actually a powdered form of collagen. You’ve probably heard about collagen in relation to fabulous skin-care products, and that’s what we have here, in a more pure form. What is collagen (vegans, earmuffs)??? Simply put, it’s dehydrated animal parts, such as bones, cartilage and minerals. It’s odorless, tasteless and completely CHOCK-FULL of valuable amino-acids that provide the building blocks of our skin, nails and hair.
With age and environmental damage, we lose collagen and our bodies don't produce it as efficiently. Supplementing our diet with a high-quality collagen powder or bone broth can be a fantastic way to rebuild your stores. What improvements might you notice after including collagen in your daily food routine? Decreased cellulite, less pronounced wrinkles, stronger teeth, nails and hair and lessened pain/stiffness in your joints…and many more!
The quality of your collagen supplement is key, however, because you want to make sure the animals were fed appropriately (grass) and taken care of humanely (no antibiotics, hormones, close quarters). The best brand I’ve found is by Great Lakes, which sources its collagen from happy, free-roaming cattle in South America. Their products are also kosher and tested to ensure cleanliness. You can find Great Lakes gelatin at most health food stores, Whole Foods, on their website or on Amazon.
I’ve started adding 1 tablespoon of collagen to my morning smoothies, and I truly think it has softened my skin and filled in some tiny lines around my mouth and eyes. I also love the extra boost of protein!
If you’re over the scientific part of this post, we're all done. For the purposes of this creamy, dreamy chocolate mousse, you just need to know that collagen is a fantastic gelling agent, and we uses it here to create a luscious, unctuous texture.
My favorite way to enjoy this pudding is topped with fresh fruit, such as bananas or berries…oh and cuddled up next to my honey. Make this the focal point of your Valentine’s meal, and may your love and skin never age!
